The Midway Study Area is defined by SR-99/Pacific Highway (Pac Hwy) South which acts as a 3 ½ mile spine holding the area together from S. 216th Street on the north to S. 272nd Street on the south. This major transportation corridor has influenced activities along its flanks for decades, and the result has been an auto-oriented style of commercial development with some storage and light industrial uses. Many of the old icons are gone, the Spanish Castle which was a hot night spot in the 1930s up to the 1960s and Roses Restaurant which was a home-grown stalwart in South King County. Most recently, the Midway Drive-in Theater gave way to new development.
Midway is an active place with Highline Community College serving the educational needs of a wide variety of students. However, Midway is ready for change. New development is occurring, the highway has had a major facelift. There also are many properties that are under utilized or vacant and METRO is expanding its Bus Rapid Transit route to connect to the Light Rail in SeaTac and beyond to Seattle.
Note: The Midway Study Area has been divided into 5 sections.
Kent-Highlands: Overlooking the Kent Valley, the closed landfill has potential for redevelopment
Midway: The mid-point between Seattle and Tacoma, Midway is home to Highline Community College and has room to grow.
Salt Air: A mix of uses define the area, and the closed Midway landfill can be the location for future development.
Woodmont: A convenient location to I-5, a large park & ride, recreational opportunities at Redondo Beach, and room to grow.
