The Woodmont area extends south from S 252nd Street to S 272nd Street and is approximately 165 acres. The area to the west of SR-99/Pacific Highway (Pac Hwy) South encompasses portions of the Woodmont Neighborhood in Des Moines and properties east of Pac Hwy are in the City of Kent. The Woodmont area, like other parts of Pac Hwy, is lined with commercial development with one exception, a 115 acre wetland is located east of the highway. This wetland is the headwaters for McSorley Creek which flows westerly through Saltwater State Park and into Puget Sound. The large wooded wetland provides a visual rest to the passers by. Commercial development dominates the area and varies from low intensity commercial strip malls to larger shopping malls like Woodmont Plaza at S 260thand the Redondo Square shopping center at S 272nd Street. Currently, this area is designated for commercial and public facility uses.
Redevelopment is happening within this area, most notably the new Fred Meyer store at South 252nd and the expansion of the Woodmont Library which will add 4,500 square feet to the facility. Plans for a 67-lot residential development “Landmarque Townhomes” were also recently approved by the City of Des Moines.
